The British Ganseys evolved from undergarments around the turn of the 19th Century. Because the fishermen wore them, the style traveled to Scotland and the Netherlands along with the fish who swam the North Sea. The fluidity of the Gansey style is apparent in the individuality of each garment made, while all were created within a certain architectural framework. Knitted in the round to the armholes, then knitted flat to the shoulders, these pullovers often included shoulder straps and neck gussets to improve fit, while the underarm gusset was the hallmark of the Gansey.
