Norwegian Knitting

The beautiful topography of Norway, with its mountains and fjords, kept knitted garments localized for much of the 1800s. In the Setesdal Valley, where the Setesdal Lusekofte developed, once winter set in, the people were confined to the area until the snow thaw the next spring.  The lovely Fana Cardigan comes from the western side of southern Norway, around Bergen.  The classic Selbu mittens developed in the 1800s as well.
