Fair Isle Bag

This pattern was first published in Interweave Knits in the Summer 2004 issue. It is presented here as a study in Continental knitting and the Norwegian Purl on both the right side and wrong side of the work, and is worked flat. If you prefer to knit the bag in the round, there are instructions for that as well! And, certainly, if you don’t want to knit Continental, you can knit it in the English style. The gauge is 28 sts and 30 rows = 4" (10 cm) in two-color St st.

Featured Techniques: Working with purl garter stitch, working with two yarns in the left hand, yarn dominance, simple two-color designs and complex two-color designs (right side and wrong side), corrugated ribbing (on the right side and the wrong side), twisting a cord. 31 photographs and color charts accompany the directions.

Size: One size, approximately 11" (28 cm) wide, 3.5" (9 cm) deep, and 11.5" (29 cm) tall.

Materials

Yarn: Rauma Strikkegarn or other firm DK weight (100% wool; 115 yd [105

m]/50g): 164 (brown), 181 (rust), 146 (gold), 150 (yellow), 184

(teal), 178 (moss green), 198 (light green), 128 (wine red), 1 skein

each.

Needles: US size 1 (2.25 mm) and size 3 (3.25 mm), or size needed to obtain

gauge.

Notions: Markers (m), tapestry needle, scissors.
