Classic Gansey Cardigan

This Gansey Cardigan is worked in one piece flat (back and forth) for the body. The first half of the underarm gusset, a diamond shaped piece, is created with paired increases in the body. The gussets are put on holders, the body is then split at the armholes, and the two fronts and back are worked flat separately. The shoulders are joined and the sleeves are picked up around the armhole. The second half of the gusset is created with paired decreases as the sleeve is knitted to the cuff circularly. The neckband and buttonbands are then picked up and worked—no seams to sew!  Gauge is 18 sts and 24 rows = 4" over St st.

Materials

•Yarn: Heavy Worsted Weight or Aran Yarn approximately 220 yds/100g hank:  1250 (1350, 1500, 1750, 2150) yds.

•Needles: Knitting needles size US 7 (4.5 mm) in 32"  (80 cm) circular needle for the body and 16" (40 cm) and double pointed needles for sleeves, or size needed to obtain gauge.  Size US 5 (3.75 mm) any length circular or straight needles for front bands.

 •Notions  Cable needles, tape measure, 6 (6, 6, 7, 7) 1/2" to 5/8" buttons, optional stitch markers.
