Jerod’s Sport Weight Gansey Pattern

Easy. This child’s gansey is knitted in Guernsey or sport weight  yarn at a more relaxed gauge than is traditional. First published in Piecework magazine. The garment includes horizontal patterning and simple shoulder extensions, seam stitches, bisected underarm gussets, and ribbed cuff, neckband, bottom edge.   It is knitted the round from the cast-on to the underarm, then knitted flat in the upper body to the shoulders.  Once the shoulders are joined, the sleeves are picked up and knitted down to the cuffs.  A seamless garment!

The gauge is 6 stitches and 8 rows/ inch in St st.

Finished Sizes: 22.5″, 24.5″, 26.5″, 28.5″, 30.5″, 32.5″

Materials

Yarn: 3 (3, 3, 4, 4, 5) 3.5 oz. (100-g) skeins of 5-ply Guernsey yarn (245 yd/ skein) or other sport weight yarn

Needles: U.S. 2 and 4 (2.75 and 3.5 mm) double pointed and U.S. 1, 2, 4 16-inch (2.25, 2.75, 3.5 mm 40-cm) circular needles. You may use 24-in. circular needles in the larger sizes. Adjust needle size to obtain gauge.
