Latvian Mittens Pattern

$8.00

Latvia is a part of Eastern Europe that borders the Baltic Sea. Mittens played an important role in traditional Latvian society, and continue to be admired for their beauty today.

Description

Mittens played an important role in the marriage rites of traditional Latvian households. Mittens and socks, knitted by a young woman, were given to her suitor when the couple became engaged. Mittens were given to the minister, those who helped to put on the food for the wedding, the special patrons for the bride and groom, and the carriage driver. The bride and groom would wear especially embellished mittens for the ceremony. After the wedding, the entire family would gather around the dowry chest and the bride would give out mittens and other knitted garments to her in-laws.
